Growing Up & Teenage Years

1966 - 1970

As a teenager Pete would very often skip school, in those days you never even got a letter sent home !!! I remember when I started at the secondary school, Pete had just left, when the teachers knew my surname, the asked me was I as bad as my brother ? (I probably was!!) You could never leave a dolls pram out - I had a beautiful Silver Cross twin one - I say did, as it was recycled into a 'bogey' made great front and back wheels apparently !! Talked his way out of that one with our Mum ! This next escapade for everyone that knew - was the bus driving experience, Pete and his friend John both about 14 years old, decided they would pop down to the bus-sheds as they were called, and just have a mooch about the buses (again anything with wheels or an engine!). Whilst they were there, they for whatever reason decided they could drive a bus and proceeded to drive one around the yard - rumour has it that they actually took it out on the road but that I dont think anyone got to the bottom of that one.....Anyway the bus was crashed, and they got caught.....BIG TROUBLE !!!! But as usual Pete would just shrug it off, and probably talk his way out of it. The love of cars and driving bug had now got him by now - Mum used to work on a Sunday, Dad would go the the pub for a couple of pints, and promptly fall asleep - leaving the car keys on the stereogram - and yes you've guessed it - he used to say 'come on lets go for a ride', like a little sheep I went with him, we drove around (he was quite proficient by then) and used all the petrol up, put the car back exactly where it was, keys back and we thought no-one ever knew !!! It was only when Mum & Dad started to think they had a petrol leak that he decided to curb the Sunday outings !!
